CHARACTER & CREATURE CREATION
FROM 2d TO 3D
C R E A T I O N O F A 3 D C H A R A C T E R
DESIGN
In this phase ideas are explored, references are collected, and the basics of the character ares defined.
MODELLING
Turning the sketches into something solid, is more than a simple translation, as the jump into 3D means taking decisions that cause an evolution of the 2D design. Rough shaping, then refined modeling / sculpting using tools such as ZBrush and Maya.
LOOK DEV
We add color, tone, textures and materials to our grey model. This can involves some sub-steps, such as UV mapping, shading, painting. To get the final appearance of the surface, skin, eyes, hair, any body wear…
RIGGING
This stage is about creating a puppet that can be posed and animated. It’s a rig of bones and joints that defines how a character’s move and what controls have the animators to work with. It requires flexibility and efficiency.
ANIMATION
Once the rig is done animators can start using those controls to make our character act: move, express with body and face.
RENDER / INTEGRATION
At the end of the process we will need to light our character and render it into an image.
